Whether you hitting one handed or two handed backhand
There is 3 ways you can position your feet,
3 stances you can use when you setup to hit the shot
now before we will talk about these stances, I wanna first mention my feet,
If I am right handed and I am hitting a backhand
that means I am hitting the ball on my left hand side
and that makes my left foot, my outside foot and my right foot, my inside foot.
Now if you are left handed like I am,
you will be hitting the backhand on your right hand side. So it’s the opposite
the right foot becomes the outside foot and the left foot becomes the inside foot.
Now with that in mind, when you setup, if you position yourself
so that if I draw a line in between my feet right now and this line is parallel with the base line.
This is called an open stance
If I now position myself so that line between my feet is perpendicular with the base line
it would form a right angle. This is the neutral stance.
And if I step acros my body with my inside foot.
So its past my outside foot,
this is the close stance and line between my feet would be on diagonal with the base line.
We start by looking at the open stance.
This is a picture of Gael Monfils hitting a two handed backhand
and his outside and inside foot, if we draw a line in between them,
that line, you can clearly see, is parallel with the base line.
So again that makes this the open stance.
Now we will go to the neutral stance.
Here is Radek Stepanek, he is hitting a sliest backhand
and again these stances applies to the slight backhand, one handed backhand and the two handed backhand.
So doesnt really mather what kind of backhand is he hitting.
The line between his outside and inside foot is now perpendicular with the base line.
So again thats a neutral stance.
And finally we go to Tommy Haas, hitting a close stance sliest backhand
and he is step across his body with his inside foot, his front foot
and the line in between his feet is now on the diagonal.
So again that front inside foot has step across his outside foot, his back foot making this a close stance.
