When you hit a forehand one of the things that have to happen
is this other hand, your non-hitting hand
has to get out of the way as you swing forward and rotate back towards the net.
You have a lot of leeway in terms of where this hand can go
Some players like myself, when I swing it comes over here
some players will catch it with the other hand
Agassi would sometimes catch it, sometimes he would hit
and this hand would come up as he followed through
Sampras would leave it up here which is a little akward for me
but it seems to work pretty well for him
The thing you wanna make sure you're NOT doing
is getting this other arm out of the way in a way that negatively impacts your shouler rotation
A lot of times some player will swing this arm out of the way
and what happens, when that happens
is the shoulders open up too soon
Swinging the arm up out of the way opens the shoulders up
so you'll be catching the ball late, or you'll be catching it in an awkward position
The way to correct this problem is to focus on the shoulder rotation
as you swing to your contact point
It's physically impossible to leave this arm here if you rotate your shoulders back towards the net
I can't rotate around if I leave my arm here
So, by focusing on the sholder rotation this arm will take care of itself
and get out of the way in a way that won't negatively impact the rest of your forehand mechanics
Let's briefly look at Andy Roddick's hand position when he follows through
because just like Agassi and a lot of other pros
Roddick will vary where his other arm goes depending on what kind of shot he's hitting
Again, it doesn't matter as much where this hand ends up
as long it doesn't negatively impact your mechanics when you swing
So, in this particular forehand
Andy has got his other arm down by his waist
the racket's over his shoulder, arm's down by his waist
In this shot now, let's zoom it in
and what you can see is that his other arm is now up by his shoulder
his hand may be by his face.
So, he's got a number of different ways how he gets that arm out of the way when he swings.
