The second step in the serve progression is to
learn how to transfer your weight and rotate your upper body correctly
over the course of your motion.
Now, in the previous video we worked on swinging up at the tennis ball
but we're gonna table that motion for a second while we practice
the weight transfer and body turn. So, just leave the racket resting on your shoulder.
Now, what you wanna do is start in the party stance
which we covered in the very first video in the serve fundamental section
My front foot is angled diagonally into the court and my back foot is behind my front foot
and parallel with the baseline.
I'm gonna start with all the weight on my back foot
I'm simply going to transfer my weight to my front foot
and at the same time rotate my upper body back towards the net.
Now, if we rewind it you'll notice that my front heel, the toes of my front foot are up
and all the weight's on my back foot like I said
but when I transfer my weight to my front foot and rotate my body
my back heel comes up
Again, if we play it one more time
you'll notice that I'm just resting the tennis racket on my shoulder
as I transfer my weight and turn my body.
Having mastered the weight transfer and body turn
now you can add the swing back end of the motion.
Starting with all the weight on my back foot
my body sideways and the tennis racket is resting on my shoulder
I'm gonna transfer my weight to my front foot
rotate my body back towards the net
swing up on edge first and then pronate.
One more time, again, the weight is on the back foot
I transfer that forward, I rotate, swing up on edge and pronate at the last second
to get to my contact point.
The reason we originally separated these two motion out is
you wanna make sure that you swing up on edge and pronation
is not effected by your weight transfer or your body turn
or vice versa. So, you need master each step individually
and then you can add them together and get to this motion
We'll watch it one more time: I transfer my weight, I turn, I swing up on edge and pronate
all at the same time.
