Titulek 1 One of the thing your back leg does when you serve is it helps you stay on balance when you follow through and when you land on your front foot. Because your upper body leads when you serve you're exploding up and into the court so your upper body is ahead of your lower body you need something to serve as a counterbalance to your upper body when you land.
So, here is Oliver serving, and again, he's exploding up and into the court As he swings up, as he makes contact and as he follows through the upper body is in front of his lower body so, when he goes to land, he kicks his back leg up so that he doesn't land flat on his face If he tried to land on both feet with his upper body into the court he would fall over. So that back leg kicking up allows him to stay on balance The other thing you should notice is that his back leg is not kicking up in some arbitratry direction It's kicking up straight back because his weight is moving into the court.
So, what that should tell you about your own serve is if you hit a serve and your leg kicks up to the side as oppose to straight back that probably means your weight is moving this way as supposed to into the court.
So the next time you go out and serve think about how you follow through and where your back leg is going where it's kicking up when you follow througth and that should help tell you whether or not you're getting your weight into the court when you serve.
