Moving either up or back for a ground stroke requires a little bit different footwork
than moving laterally for a tennis ball
The key, just like those other shots
is get your body sidewyas first, and then move to the ball
Let's start with a deep ball
If I'm gonna move to a deep ball there's a couple of things I can do
Coming out of the split step, I hit my split
I can step back, it's just like a pivot but I'm stepping back as oppose to stepping out now
I step back and then I can side shuffle back to the tennis ball a little bit
and can get set and hit it
The other thing I can do is hit my split set
and then step forward with my inside, with my right foot in this case
and use that to push off back so that I can move back a little bit more quickly
Now, if I'm moving to a short ball
what I do is I hit my split step and then I'm gonna step forward
with my inside foot, my right foot again and then pivot my back foot around
get sideways, and then shuffle up to the tennis ball, get set and hit it.
Let's take a look at how I move to get to short and deep balls
We'll start with the deep ball
and coming out of my split step
and in this particular case I'm actually gonna step forward
with my right foot, my inside foot and then take a step back
a pivot with my outside foot, my left foot
and then I'm set for the deeper ground stroke
and again, I could take a side shuffle or so to get back a little more if I needed to
Now let's move on to the short ball
in this instance when I come out of the split
again I step forward with my right, inside foot
and then I pivot around with my left foot
to get myself sideways and that's key
if I'm gonna move to either one of these balls
I need to get myself sideways first and then move either up or back
by taking a couple of side shuffles to slightly adjust my position
to get myself ready to hit my ground stroke
