In the previous video we've talked about recovering back to the middle of the court using the side shuffle
and that's how you gonna wanna recover back most of the time.
But if you're pulled wide off the court
you'll need to use little bit different footwork
it becomes more important to cover a lot of ground quickly
so that you're not leaving too much of the other side of the court open.
There are a couple of ways you can do that
The first way we're gonna focus on is called the cross step.
So, behind me I hit a wide ball, so this is me shadowing a wide ball
I'm gonna get myself facing the net
my entire body just like I would for any other shot
but then from this spot I'm gonna step across my right foot
with my left foot and that's the cross step right here
let's watch it again, I'm facing the net and then I step across
with my left foot and that lets me cover a little bit more ground
that the side shuffle would right after I hit the ball
There is another type of step you can take which is similar to the cross step
but it's little bit different and let's you cover a little bit more ground
It's called the run step.
So, having gotten my body facing the net in this particular clip
instead of stepping across with my left foot
now, what I'm gonna do is pretty much pretend to run back to the middle of the court
I'm gonna take a run step with my left foot, my upper body turns to face the center of the court
and I take that one run step, what you'll see here
is that after I take one run step I get my body back into the side shuffle
and with either the cross step or the run step
that's key, what you want to do is either take one cross step or one run step
and you need to be back in the side shuffle right before your opponent makes contact with the tennis ball
Again, like I had said in the side shuffle video
if you're running back to the middle of the court when your opponent hits
he can very easily wrong foot you, it's very hard to change direction
so, what you need to do is take that one cross step or that one run step
cover as much ground as you can
and then get back in the side shuffle before your opponent hits the ball
so that you can move back out to the side you were just at
or move across to the other side of the court
move up, move back, do whatever you need to do
