The second key difference between the flat serve and slice serve
is that direction that you swing and prorate when you hit the ball.
For the flat serve you try to come straight to that ball and slap it,
but on the slice serve you wanna swing acrros the ball
and generate that side spin thats gonna cause the ball to hook and skid when it bounces.
Now in these serves behind me,
we have got my flat serve to my right and my slice serve to my left, splitscreen.
I am serving to the ad court
and what you will notice is that as I begin to swing up at the tennis ball, lets freeze it when I get to the L position,
during my swing and you will notice that my rockets are pointing different directions.
On my flat serve, my rocket is pretty much pointing at the ad court,
because when I hit, I just gonna come straight through, slap it
and because of that I am gonna be swinging the direction where the ball goes,
but on my slice serve
now it looks like my rocket is facing more towards the deuce courth,
because I am gonna come acrros the tennis ball and generate that side spin.
If we continue to play these forward and then freeze them at contact.
The other key that you will notice is, despite the fact that I am swinging in different directions,
my strings are facing the same direction at contact
and thats key what generate spin on the tennis ball
is the direction that my strings move acrross the ball at contact
not the direction my strings are facing at contact.
So if we rewind these two clips back to the L position
what I have done to get my strings facing the same direction at contact
is to time my pronation a little bit diferent.
The final thing I wanna do is to clarify the relationship between your tassel location and your swing direction.
why do I want put the ball futher to my side when I am hitting a slice serve
as suppose to a flat serve or kick serve.
If you toss the ball like you were try to hit a flat serve
you could swing acrross the ball if you wanted to,
but just based on the way your arm, shoulder and body is build up
you can’t swing across the ball as aggressively as if you have tossed further to your side.
So thats why you want the toss further off to your side.
You can attack the ball more aggressively,
get more side spin with that toss location
then you othervise would if you were trying to toss it for a flat serve or kick serve.
