The third and final step in the return of serve
is to step across your body with your inside foot
and at the same time hit the tennis ball.
So behind me, having stepped out, turned my shoulders
and gotten my racket back
At the same time, I step across my body with my inside foot, my right foot in this case
since I'm a lefty and I hit the tennis ball and I follow through.
Now, if we watch this again, what you might notice is that I'm hitting a close stance forehand
The reason I'm hitting a close stance forehand is because
I'm probably still gonna be moving to the tennis ball
when I'm returning.
That first step out is not gonna get me into the position
so I still need to be moving to the ball
Because of that I step across with my inside foot as I hit.
Like I had said in some other videos on this website
If you can avoid it, don't wanna be hitting a close stance forehand
because it limits your upper body rotation
but a lot of times on the return of serve you have no choice.
YOu have to keep moving to the tennis ball as you hit
because a serve is coming at you very hard
So that's why again, from this position
I step and hit at the same time.
Having stepped out, turned my shoulders and got my racket back
I'm going to continue moving to the tennis ball
I'm gonna close on the ball by stepping into the court
I'm still moving diagonally with my inside foot and at the same time
I'm gonna hit the ball, I'm gonna swing, hit and then follow through.
Again, that footwork like I've just said, that close stance footwork
I have to use it because I'm still moving to the tennis ball.
Let's look at two pictures to see how Roddick steps across and swings at the same time.
Having stepped out with his outside foot, his right foot in this case
because he is a righty, he's also got his shoulders sideways and his racket back
with that abbreviated back swing.
In this next picture here, he's now hit the ball
and you can see, he's stepped across his body with his inside foot
and he's followed through around to the other side of his body
so again, he's used that close stance footwork because he's still moving to the tennis ball
as he hits his return.
