One of the things you wanna make sure you're doing when you're returing serve
is vary your court positioning depending whether you're hitting first serve or second serve
Specifically on a second serve you wanna stand closer in
and you wanna do this for couple reasons.
First, you generally wanna be more aggressive on a second serve
you don't wanna give your opponent an opportunity to spin the ball in
and start the point off. You wanna stand closer in
because that cuts down on the amount of time it takes
for the serve to get to you and it cuts down on the amount of time it takes
your return to get back to your opponent.
That puts pressure on your opponent and it forces him to hit a better second servce
again, he doesn't just get that free pass to start the point off.
Second, second serves are typically hit with a more spin than they are with a first serve.
If your opponent hits you a kick serve
that ball's gonna move and when it bounces
that spin is gonna cause it to break and kick up
by standing closer in you give the tennis ball less time to kick and break after it bounces
so it makes returning little bit easier when your opponent has a lot of spin on his serve.
Now, behind me here we've got Robby Denepre (?)
returning in a recent World Team Tennis event
This first shot here is him returing a first serve.
He's couple steps behind the baseline.
On this next shot, now he's closer in because this is where he positions himself
on a second serve.
So again, there is not a huge amount of difference there, it's maybe one or two steps
and it's gonna depend on what kind of serve your opponent hits
for first and second serve
Let's clip to a different perspective and just take one more look
You can see his opponent is in the trophy pose
and we zoom over to Robby, this is a first serve
he is a couple steps back when he's returning
we'll clip to this next clip and again, he is in the trophy pose
his opponent, but this is a second serve
and if we move over to Robby now, he's taken a couple steps in on his return.
